John Kawaihakulani “Bubull” Kalani Sr., 67, of Hilo, formerly of Pahala, died March 25 at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Kealakekua, he was a retired welder for the former Ka‘u Sugar Co., former resident manager of the Country Club Hotel, co-chair of the Punalu‘u Makahiki, security for the Pahala Christmas Parade and a U.S. Navy Vietnam War veteran. Visitation 4-6 p.m. Friday (April 29) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Prayer service at 6 p.m. Graveside committal service 9 a.m. Saturday (April 30) at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire; no flowers. Survived by wife, Christine Kalani of Hilo; Son, John K. (Deanine) Kalani Jr.; daughters, Chantelle Kalani and Starlette Kalani of Hilo; hanai son, Shayden Requelman Kalani; godson, Gabriel P.S. Sumie Ueda Onaga, 99, of Papaikou, died April 15 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born in Paukaa Mauka, she worked at Hawaii Importing Co. and the former C. Brewer &Co. crop log laboratory, was a homemaker and member of Papaikou Hongwanji Mission and Honomu Henjoji Mission. Services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts).
